Community
The Eastern Suburbs is one of the greatest areas in Auckland to live, work and play in. At Acorn we are committed to our local community, which includes the suburbs of St Heliers, Glendowie, Mission Bay, Kohimarama and Meadowbank.
We value the diversity of the community to which we belong and strive to provide an early childhood education centre that is responsive to family and community needs. We try to interact with all our local schools to ensure we provide a smooth transition from pre-school to school. We encourage the schools to come and view our centre and for the new entrant teachers to take the time to read our children’s portfolios. We also enjoy taking the children into the local community. Recently we took the Kiwi Room children to St Heliers Beach to collect rubbish; our Tuis visited the local pet shop and we have trips planned to the Tahuna Torea Nature Reserve and Mt Taylor. Each week a teacher and a small group of 4 year olds walk to the Grace Joel Retirement Village and interact with the residents through music and movement. The children use balloons, bubbles and action songs. This is a popular trip for the children and the Grace Joel residents. ![]() We aim to support charities and to involve the children in memorable activities around this. In 2011 we participated in:
Each Anzac Day a group of children and a teacher prepare a flower wreath and take this to St Heliers on Anzac morning. At Acorn we love to see families exploring the great outdoors together and being active in their local community. Together we have collated our favourite ideas to share with you. Please take the time to read the guide and if you would like a hard copy see Catherine. The Acorn Guide |
